Tiered roles for a platform

Keep a clean role hierarchy — each tier grants its own role and removes the ones below it, so access always matches the current plan.

Multi-tier platforms need one role per tier that stays consistent through upgrades. With per-tier Role Mapping rules, Starter/Pro/Enterprise each add their own role and remove lower-tier roles, so a customer’s roles always reflect their current plan. This recipe builds tiered roles.

What you get
  • Each tier maps to its own WordPress role.
  • Upgrading strips lower-tier roles automatically.
  • Roles always match the active plan.
  • Downstream tools see the correct tier.

Good to know

Notes & edge cases

Plan switching re-syncs roles automatically, so an upgrade/downgrade lands on the right role set.
If multiple rules grant the same role, it persists until all granting subscriptions end.
Role Mapping has no dripping schedule — roles apply immediately on status change.

FAQ

Questions, answered

The new tier’s rule adds its role and removes lower-tier roles, and plan switching re-syncs everything — so roles always match the current plan.

Set a Fallback Role; it’s assigned only when a user would otherwise be left with no roles after removals.
